How To Travel Tulum, Mexico on a Budget & Where to Stay

Tulum~ the up-and-coming popular Caribbean destination due to its Bali-like vibes, adventures, parties, and more. But can you go to Tulum on a budget? You sure can! Get the most out of your vacation with these tips.

Budget-friendly accommodation in Tulum, Mexico

When booking accommodation, do not stay in the Hotel Zone

The Hotel Zone is extremely expensive. If you are traveling with a group, stay at an Air BnB on or near road 307. They are extremely affordable. Six of us went together and it ended up only costing us each $80 for 5 nights. I will link our air BnB if you would like to check it out.

If you are traveling solo, stay at a hostel. Hostelworld is my favorite & most reputable site to book hostels for the best prices.

Rent bikes to get around

Forget about taxis!!! You can rent bicycles in Tulum for about $7/day. Everything is within biking distance, plus it’s a great way to get to explore. My friends and I rented bikes with Ola Bike Rental.

Eat local

I cannot stress this enough when traveling. By eating at local restaurants off the hotel zone, you will have a delicious meal for the best bang for your buck. Some restaurants I recommend include Burrito Amour, Bonita Burger, Taqueria Honorio, and Liefs but there are so many great places all around town in the city center.

When getting to Tulum, take the ADO bus

There are no direct flights to Tulum. The closest airport you fly into is going to be Cancun. From there, you can buy tickets to take the ADO bus right to Tulum city center. The bus is nice and air-conditioned and only costs about $14 one way.

All beaches in Tulum are free. So enjoy at your leisure

Some of my favorites were near Ziggys and Ahu.
